Is it worth repairing a damaged transformer?
The decision to repair or replace a transformer is always individual and depends on many factors, such as the transformer’s age, the extent of the damage, repair costs, and the availability of spare parts. Comparing a transformer to a car, we can say that both an old and a new car may need repairs. Sometimes, investing in repairs is more cost-effective, while at other times, it’s better to buy new. For transformers, the situation is similar. The cost of a complete overhaul usually does not exceed 30% of the value of a new unit, and a medium repair around 5%, making repair a viable option. This way, we extend the transformer’s lifespan and avoid the expenses of purchasing and installing a new unit.
It’s worth emphasizing that regular inspections and maintenance of a transformer can significantly extend its lifespan and prevent major breakdowns.
To make the final decision, we recommend a detailed diagnostic. Based on the results, we can accurately assess the transformer’s condition and suggest the
optimal solution.
Why does insulating oil lose its properties?
Insulating oil is a critical component of any transformer. Its main role is to cool and insulate the internal parts of the unit. Unfortunately, over time, the oil can lose its
properties and degrade.
The main causes of oil degradation are:
- High Temperature: The transformer operates optimally at around 80°C. Higher temperatures accelerate oil breakdown.
- Overloads: Overloading the transformer leads to temperature increases, accelerating oil degradation and damaging other parts of the device.
- Moisture: The presence of moisture in the oil weakens the transformer and promotes partial discharges.
Regular oil testing is therefore essential. Through testing, we can detect any issues early on and take appropriate actions, such as replacing the oil or
improving its properties through centrifugation.
We recommend conducting oil tests at least once a year.
Can only bushings (insulators) in a transformer be replaced?
Replacing just the insulators in a transformer is not recommended. A transformer
with compromised insulation quickly absorbs moisture from the surroundings, which
can lead to serious damage to other components.
If an insulator is damaged, we recommend:
- Drying the transformer: Removing moisture from inside the unit is essential before making any repairs.
- Centrifuging: The centrifugation process helps remove degradation products and moisture from the oil.
- Oil replacement: In some cases, replacing the entire oil supply with new oil may be necessary.
Only after these steps should you proceed with replacing the insulator. Keep in mind that a transformer is a complex device, and any modification to
its construction should be performed by experienced professionals.
What is the cost of a complete transformer overhaul?
The cost of a complete transformer overhaul depends on several factors.
It typically includes:
- Oil replacement
- Rewinding the windings
- Core repair
- Tap changer replacement
- Replacement of damaged components
- Preparation of inspection reports necessary for reinstallation
The extent of these tasks directly affects the final price. Generally, the cost of a complete overhaul does not exceed 30% of the value of a new transformer, though it can vary widely. In some cases, it may be lower, while in others, it may be higher.
To get an accurate estimate, a detailed assessment by an experienced technician is necessary. Only after conducting these tests can we determine the scope of the required work and provide an exact cost estimate.

When should you consider repairing a transformer?
Repairing a transformer is a cost-effective solution for issues that do not require replacing the entire unit. It is advisable when the damage involves specific components (e.g., winding or insulation) and the repair cost is significantly lower than purchasing a new transformer. A thorough inspection should confirm that the device can be restored to full functionality and safe operation. Regular technical maintenance and diagnostics can help determine the right time for a repair.
